One of the grittiest scenes in Rocky takes us straight to Philadelphia’s waterfront, where we see Rocky Balboa at the docks collecting a debt for Mr. Gazzo. It’s early morning, and the city’s working-class heartbeat is on full display—stevedores, oil tankers, and the murky Delaware River setting the scene for one of the film’s first memorable moments.

Rocky’s Dock Scene – Filming Location

We believe this scene was filmed near Pier 24 (or one of the adjacent piers). Today, it’s a quiet, open parking lot, but back in 1975, it was a gritty working dock. From here, you get a clear view of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, just like in the film.
As Rocky enters this scene, you’ll notice a massive oil tanker, the Sohio Resolute—a real-life ship built in 1971 and scrapped in 1993. This ship just happened to be docked there at the time, forever cementing its place in movie history.
While Rocky director John G. Avildsen never officially documented the exact spot, this location best matches the waterfront where Rocky confronts Bob.
Filming Location Tip: These docks are directly across the street from the old railroad yard where Rocky jogs holding a pair of bricks in the series’ very first raining montage.
