About this Filming Location

Laurel Hill Cemetery

If you’re a serious Rocky fan, there’s one place in Philadelphia that hits you right in the gut—Adrian Balboa’s grave. Shot on location at the historic Laurel Hill Cemetery, this site became Rocky’s quiet place to mourn, reflect, and talk to the love of his life. First seen in Rocky Balboa (2006) and revisited in Creed and Creed II, this filming location has taken on a life of its own—just like the characters we grew up with.

How Did Adrian Die in the Rocky Series?

Adrian’s death isn’t shown on screen, but it casts a long shadow over Rocky Balboa. By the time the movie begins, she’s already passed away from ovarian cancer in 2002. Her absence becomes the emotional core of the film, shaping Rocky’s grief and fueling his decision to step back into the ring. For a full breakdown of how Talia Shire’s absence from the film impacted the story, check out our deep dive: How Did Adrian Die in Rocky?

Yes, Adrian Balboa’s Headstone Is Still There

After filming wrapped on Rocky Balboa, the crew left behind one of the actual prop headstones used in the movie. It wasn’t just tossed in storage—it was installed right on the cemetery grounds. Today, visitors often mistake it for a real memorial. That’s how realistic it looks. These day’s it’s getting realistically weathered, green and mossy.

There were actually two versions of Adrian’s headstone made. One was a close-up prop used for tighter shots. The other, made to stand up to the elements, is the one that stayed behind at Laurel Hill.

Stallone auctioned off the original lightweight prop in his 2015 Heritage auction. And here’s a little continuity curveball: Adrian’s gravestone lists her birth year as 1950. But in the original Rocky, she’s said to be “pushin’ 30” in 1975, which would’ve made her born around 1945. Hey, even icons get retconned.

How to Find the Adrian Balboa Grave

Adrian’s headstone is usually located near the front entrance of Laurel Hill Cemetery. The grounds staff can point you right to it if you ask. The old oak tree that once held Rocky’s folding chair was cut down years ago, but fans still remember those quiet scenes under its branches.

And yes—Rocky’s chair? It was real. The film crew bolted it to the tree to get those final emotional shots. It stayed up for a while after filming, but Philly weather eventually did it in.

Paulie’s Grave Joins the Scene

When Creed II rolled around, the crew added another emotional punch: Paulie’s headstone. They left his gravestone right beside Adrian’s, tying the Balboa family history together on screen and in the cemetery itself. Visiting fans sometimes leave flowers, coins or even bottles of Paulie’s favorite Four Roses bourbon on the graves.

It’s worth noting that the grave placements in Creed and Rocky Balboa don’t exactly match—but they’re in the same general area. Hollywood magic, right?

A Real-Deal Cemetery with American Icons

While Adrian and Paulie might be fictional, Laurel Hill Cemetery is packed with real-life legends. You’ll find the graves of some serious American heavyweights here—like General George Meade, the guy who won the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War. He’s buried just a short walk from Adrian’s headstone.

Want more history? How about David Rittenhouse—the astronomer and inventor who helped shape early America. Or Harry Kalas, the voice of the Phillies, whose final resting place is marked with a microphone-shaped tombstone.

Even signer of the Declaration of Independence Thomas McKean is here. That’s right—this place is where Philly history and Hollywood emotion collide. If you’re visiting Adrian Balboa’s grave, take a little extra time and soak in the real stories around you.
