About this Filming Location

Mighty Mick’s Gym

Mighty Mick’s Gym is one of the most legendary locations in the Rocky franchise. Fans still ask, “Where is Mighty Mick’s Boxing Gym?” and whether it was a real gym. While the building stands in Philadelphia, things aren’t quite as they seemed in the movies. Let’s break down the history of Mighty Mick’s Gym, its role in the films, and what’s happening to it today.

Was Mighty Mick’s Gym a Real Gym?

The truth is, Mighty Mick’s Gym never operated as a real boxing gym. The exterior, seen throughout multiple Rocky films, is a genuine Philadelphia building. The inside? That was filmed somewhere else entirely.

The three-story structure was built in 1910. Over the years, it changed hands a few times and even became a Dollar Plus market in the early 2000s. Interior training scenes from Rocky I, II, III, and V were shot at Main Street Gym in Los Angeles, which was a real gym before it was demolished. By the time Creed rolled around in 2015, they filmed the inside of Mighty Mick’s Gym at Must Fight Boxing Club in Chester, PA (504 Edgmont Ave, Chester, PA 19013).

Mighty Mick’s Gym in the Rocky Movies

Rocky Balboa first steps into Mighty Mick’s Gym in Rocky (1976). The place looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in decades. Mickey Goldmill runs it old-school, training fighters the hard way. This is where Rocky’s transformation begins.

In Rocky III, Mickey passes away, and the gym fades into the background. By Rocky V, a broke and beaten-down Rocky returns to Mighty Mick’s Gym, hoping to revive it. He trains Tommy Gunn here, trying to pass on his knowledge. A mural of red boxing gloves, painted for the film, still faintly remained on the building’s side into the 21st century.

By the time Rocky Balboa hits in 2006, the gym is in bad shape. Rocky and Paulie visit to find the sign crumbling, the place abandoned. Rocky is no longer running things, focusing instead on Adrian’s Restaurant. In Creed, the gym is back in action, fully renovated and run by Pete Sporino, father of Leo “The Lion” Sporino. The new version of the Mighty Mick’s Gym sign hangs over the door for this film.

Where is Mighty Mick’s Boxing Gym Today?

If you’re wondering, “Where is Mighty Mick’s Boxing Gym?”, it’s still in the same spot in Philadelphia, but it doesn’t quite the same anymore.

The building went through renovations starting in 2021. The renovation turned the structure into a mixed-use building. The ground floor now holds a 1,276-square-foot commercial space. The second and third floors were converted into four apartment units, and they even added a rooftop deck. During construction, a lot of the original structure was altered. What remains still stands as a piece of Rocky history, but the feel of the old gym is long gone.

The Mighty Mick’s Gym Sign: A Changing Icon

The Mighty Mick’s Gym sign is one of the most iconic images from the franchise. But here’s the thing—it was never a permanent fixture. The crew painted a new version for each movie and hung it up only during filming. If you visit today, you won’t see it. What’s left, at least for now, is the faded Rocky V mural.

What Happened to the Rocky V Mural?

For now, the Rocky V mural is still clinging to life. As of 2023, the original red boxing gloves graffiti on the Front Street side of the building is still visible. No one knows how long it will last with all the changes happening around it. It’s a piece of movie history, but time is catching up.
